April 18-29th:
Algerian Former Diplomats Visit to US: We (ALGERIANS FOR LEGALITY
AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN ALGERIA) are a volunteer organization of Algerian academics
and professionals dedicated to the promotion of human rights in our country. We are
inviting three Algerian personalities to visit the United States on a tour between April
18 and 28, 1998. These individuals are: Prof. Abdelhamid Brahimi, former Prime Minister
of Algeria and currently Director of the Center for Maghreb Studies in London, Mr. Mohamed
Laarbi Zitout, a former diplomat and Mr. Mohamed Denidni a former newspaper editor.

April 20th: Southern Center for International Studies in Atlanta discussion
panel on Algeria: Algeria Watch International will monitor an upcoming
event sponsored by the Southern Center for International Studies
in Atlanta. The Algerian ambassador to the US, Ramtane Lamamra, was scheduled to
be the key note speaker, but he canceled at the last minute. Instead,
Prof. Azzedine Layachi, of St. Johns University, will speak. The event is scheduled
for April 20 at 7 pm at SCIS. The panel will include a CNN Journalist,
an Atlanta based attorney associated with the Arab-American Association.

May 6th: MIEUX COMPRENDRE L'ALGERIE:CONFERENCE-DEBAT:
Pour mieux comprendre la crise algérienne, les Algériens et leurs cultures,
mais aussi leur résistance, leurs espoirs et leur vie quotidienne, le comité
de Morlaix du mouvement de la paix organise une conférence-débat, mercredi 6
mai, à 20 h 30, à l'hôtel de ville de Morlaix. Le film « Chroniques algériennes »,
oeuvre du réalisateur algérien J.-P. Lledo, un des fondateurs du comité algérien
contre la torture, sera projeté. Seront présents pour l'occasion, Rachid Boudjedra,
écrivain algérien et professeur de philosophie, ainsi que René Vautier, cinéaste-auteur
de « Avoir 20 ans dans les Aures ».

May 11-15th, 1998:
Colloque sur l'Algerie: BILAN D'UNE ÉVOLUTION CHAOTIQUE: Guerre civile?
Transition démocratique? Lutte anti-terroriste? Quel nom donner à cette évolution chaotique?
La réponse est d'autant plus délicate que le drame algérien se déroule dans l'opacité de la
scène intérieure algérienne et le silence des acteurs internationaux. Ces questions méritent
que des sociologues, des historiens, des économistes, des juristes... essayent ensemble au
congrès de l'ACFAS, de comprendre ce qui s'est passé, ce qui se trame et vers où l'Algérie
se dirige, pour tirer les enseignements riches de ce cas, en apparence aberrant, d'évolution
socio-politique.
