    Dear AWI members:
    
    The following is a highlight of AWI actions since last Wednesday.
    
    
    1. AWI STATEMENTS
    
    AWI issued two public statements. In the first one, statement AWI9803003, 
    AWI joined its voice to Amnesty International, the International Federation of 
    Human Rights, Human Rights Watch and Reporters Sans Frontieres in 
    expressing its regret over the opposition by the European Parliament to an 
    international investigation into the Human Rights situation in Algeria. In the
    second one, AWI expressed its satisfaction to learn that the Algerian authorities
    have decided to grant a delegation from the World Association of Newspapers
    (WAN) entry to Algeria for discussions with senior officials on Algeria's
    information policies.

    I would like to remind AWI members that you are prefectly welcome
    to present the BOD with draft texts for public statements. As AWI 
    members, this is one of the privileges you enjoy. The BOD members 
    time and energy are taxed and we are doing our best to answer AWI 
    members suggestions. It would help the BOD tremendously if members 
    presented the BOD with drafted statements of what they would like
    AWI to say.  The BOD, of course, reserves the right to modify the text 
    or to refuse its publication if it feels that it is not in compliance with AWI's 
    mission.
    
    
    
    2. FUND RAISING:
    
    AWI is preparing to start a fund-raising campaign. Stay tuned for more
    information to come.
    
    
    3. WEB PAGE:
    
    We have been announding it for a while, and It is finally here !!! The main
    AWI web page has arrived. Please have a look at it at:

    4. UNCHR Session:
    
    Following up on Azzedine Mansour's suggestion, the BOD is following 
    closely the UNCHR session that started on March 16. AWI members
    are encouraged to monitor the session and post on AWI's list whatever
    information you can gather.
    
    
    5. FLYER:
    
    We are woking on getting the flyer into a GIF for everyone to 
    see and use.
    
    6. NEWSLETTER:
    
    A complete draft of the newsletter will be finished by April 1st.
    
    
    7. LISTSERV HOST:
    
    Karim Diff will no longer be able to accomodate the awi list for
    long.  Therefore, we are looking for a new listserv host for the 
    awi list.  We are asking for help from AWI members to find either 
    a free host one or one that is reasonably priced.
    
    
    8. EDITORIALS:
    
    We have begun collecting newspaper editorials on Algeria.  This will
    help us build an informed image of the positions various newspapers
    have on the Algeria crisis.
